New cars with the Hurricane Twin Turbo I-6 Engine are coming to Fontana Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM later in 2022

Stellantis Engine

Stellantis North America, the auto giant and parent to leading automobile brands Jeep®, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, FIAT, and Alfa Romeo, debuted the new 3.0-liter Hurricane Twin Turbo I-6 Engine on March 25, 2022. The new innovative six-cylinder engine is set to demonstrate an unusual combination of performance and efficiency, a feature hard to come by in most automobile engines.

Details of the new Hurricane Twin Turbo I-6 Engine

The new Twin Turbo engine is designed with supreme craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology, including Plasma Wire Transfer Arc (PWTA) coating in the cylinders for ultra-thin and low friction surfaces, two high-flow, low-inertia turbochargers, each feeding three cylinders, producing an instant response to every throttle engagement. The twin turbochargers with less inertia provide better efficiency than a single large turbo through a more accelerated spin time, boosting the engine at a lower rpm.

The engine can produce V-8 level performance while maintaining a highly efficient fuel consumption.

The Stellantis Propulsion System delivers two unique variants, Standard output or Hurricane SO, which uses cooled exhaust gas circulation (ESG) and delivers more than 400 horsepower, and 450 lb.-ft of torque tuned for efficiency. The other, the high output or Hurricane HO, provides more than 500 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft of torque for high performance while maintaining optimized combustion for low consumption.

Further optimizations are found in a fitted high-flow ball-valve thermostat which minimizes restrictions in the cooling system through a continuously variable displacement oil pump and dual overhead camshafts.

Solid steps to achieving electric vehicle lineup plans by 2030 without neglecting the present

It’s possible to go on and on about the innovations and optimizations found in the new Hurricane Twin Turbo I-6 Engine, but the most crucial message may be lost in the details. The new Hurricane engine is cleaner than previous engines; it combines efficiency with performance. The design considers potential future integration with electrification for low-emission vehicles. In retrospect, the new Hurricane engine will power the proposed EV vehicles on the STLA Large and STLA Frame platforms, starting with the electric Jeep® Grand Cherokee and RAM 1500, respectively.

The new engine further cements Stellantis’ commitment to a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and 0% net Carbon emission by 2038.
