What Changed for the 2027 Jeep® Wrangler

Two powertrain changes define the 2027 model year, and both are worth understanding before you order.

Gone: the Wrangler 4xe

Stellantis has confirmed it is phasing out plug-in hybrid programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, ending the Wrangler 4xe along with the Grand Cherokee 4xe and the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid. A planned 2027 update that would have paired the 4xe system with a turbocharged four-cylinder was cancelled. Every 2027 Wrangler is gas-powered.

Back: the 6.4L HEMI® V8

The V8 went the other direction. After the Rubicon 392 Final Edition looked like the end of the line, the engine returned for 2026 and carries into 2027 in two models — the Willys 392 and the Moab 392, both rated at 470 hp and 470 lb-ft. The Rubicon 392 name does not appear in the 2027 lineup.

2027 Wrangler 4-Door Trim Lineup

Nine four-door trims, three engines, one clear ladder. The Sport is the entry point; the Moab 392 sits at the top.

A few landmarks worth knowing. The Sport S adds equipment over the Sport without changing the powertrain. The Rubicon and Sahara sit next to each other in the ladder but serve opposite buyers — the Rubicon puts its content into Rock-Trac® and trail hardware, the Sahara into the Selec-Trac® full-time system, leather-trimmed seating and automatic temperature control. The Rubicon X builds on the Rubicon with premium content throughout.

The Sport RHD is a specialty right-hand-drive build aimed at rural mail carriers and similar users, not a conventional retail trim — worth knowing before it raises questions in the lineup.

Powertrains and 4×4 Systems

Three engines span the 2027 lineup, not two.

The 3.6L Pentastar® V6 is standard on five trims — Sport, Sport S, Willys, Rubicon and Rubicon X — rated at 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual and running on regular fuel.

The 2.0L Turbo I4 is standard on the Sahara and the Sport RHD, rated at 270 hp and 295 lb-ft. It comes only with the eight-speed automatic and runs on 87-octane regular fuel, with 91-octane or higher premium recommended for optimal performance.

The 6.4L HEMI® V8 returns for 2027 in the Willys 392 and Moab 392, both rated at 470 hp and 470 lb-ft, both eight-speed automatic, both premium fuel.

The 4×4 systems differ by intent. Command-Trac® is a part-time system with a 2.72:1 low range — proven for drivers who move between pavement and dirt. Rock-Trac® steps up to a 4:1 low range on the Rubicon and Rubicon X, in part-time or full-time form depending on how the vehicle is configured. Selec-Trac® is a full-time system with a 2.72:1 low range, used on the Sahara and on both V8 models, and it handles traction changes automatically without the driver switching modes.

Willys 392 vs. Moab 392: Choosing Between the V8s

Both V8 models share the 6.4L HEMI®, the eight-speed automatic, Selec-Trac® full-time 4×4, a 4.56 rear axle ratio, an electronic rear locker, heavy-duty Dana axles, 35-inch tires on 17-inch wheels, steel front and rear bumpers, rock rails, skid plates, tow hooks and a receiver hitch. The 35-inch tire and suspension content is also what makes them longer and wider than a standard four-door.

Jeep® Wrangler Willys 392

The accessible V8. It runs a conventional front differential and a fixed front stabilizer bar, and comes standard with a black Sunrider® soft top and black Nappa leather seating.

Jeep® Wrangler Moab 392

Built for harder trails. It adds an electronic locking front differential and an electronically disconnecting front stabilizer bar, and comes standard with a body-color three-piece hardtop and black Nappa leather with Sepia accents.

It is listed with the Sky One-Touch® power top and the factory Warn winch available.

2027 Limited Editions: Sarge, Laredo and Smoky Mountain

Jeep’s Twelve 4 Twelve program drops one limited-edition Wrangler per month for twelve months in honor of the brand’s 85th anniversary. Three of those drops are 2027 models. The Sarge and the Laredo come in two-door and four-door form; the Smoky Mountain is four-door only.

The Sarge leans on the brand’s military roots — order it in ’41 paint and the roof and grille surround come in Bright White; choose any other color and you get a ’41 roof and grille surround instead. The Laredo revives a nameplate that defined the brand through the 1980s. The Smoky Mountain opened for orders in August 2026 and is the darkest-styled of the three.

Comfort content separates cleanly by trim. Leather seating and dual power front seats are standard on the Rubicon X, Willys 392 and Moab 392. The Sahara comes standard with leather-trimmed seating and offers power front seats as an option, and leather is optional on the Rubicon. A heated steering wheel is standard on the Rubicon, Sahara, Rubicon X and both 392 models, and optional on the Sport S, Willys and Sport RHD. Alloy wheels are standard on every trim except the Sport, where they are optional.

Safety and Driver Assistance

IIHS results apply to the 2026 Wrangler 4-Door; the 2027 has not been separately rated. For 2026 models built after October 2025, Jeep added frame rail reinforcements that resolved a long-running tipping problem in the driver-side small overlap test. Those units earn a good rating in the driver-side evaluation. The overall small overlap rating is acceptable, held back by elevated injury risk to the front passenger’s right foot and leg in the passenger-side test.

On the equipment side, a collision warning system is standard on every 2027 four-door trim except the Sport.
