Every 2026 Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab comes standard with the 6.4L HEMI V8 and offers the 6.7L Cummins HO Turbo Diesel I6. Both engines pair with the TorqueFlite® HD eight-speed automatic, which became standard across the Chassis Cab line for the 2025 model year and replaced the six-speed automatics previously used with both the gas and diesel engines.
The gas HEMI carries the higher maximum payload on both models. That suits municipal fleets, local delivery operations, and short-haul trades. The Cummins delivers its 800 lb-ft early in the rev range. That is what a fully loaded chassis cab needs on a sustained climb like the Cajon Pass grade north of Fontana on I-15.

Ram builds the rear frame from 50,000-psi steel. It is a one-piece C-channel with a flat mounting surface and no chassis components above the rails, which keeps upfit mounting straightforward for your body builder.
Both models include the Vehicle System Interface Module and six auxiliary switches. The sixth switch becomes a dedicated power take-off switch when the truck is equipped for PTO. PTO access is available from the left or right side on both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations.

Properly equipped with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel, the 2026 Ram 4500 Chassis Cab tows up to 29,440 pounds. With the 6.4L HEMI V8, maximum towing is 21,240 pounds.
For 2026 the 6.7L Cummins HO Turbo Diesel pairs with the TorqueFlite HD eight-speed automatic. It supports power take-off from the left or right side.
A 52-gallon rear tank is standard. A 22-gallon midship tank is optional, and combining both brings total fuel capacity to 74 gallons.
Models with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel use Selective Catalytic Reduction and require DEF. Gas models with the 6.4L HEMI V8 run on regular unleaded and do not use DEF.
